Treat Yourself

#selfcareisntselfish

The Society of American Florists names February 14 as the number one holiday for florists, estimating that a quarter of a billion roses are grown just for the occasion. For US chocolate manufacturers, it’s a bigger day than Halloween. But what can you give one of the most important people in your life – yourself?

Almost 25 million posts are tagged #selfcare on Instagram, and we tend to use the term to describe indulging in things that make us feel good. For all its decadent connotations, we shouldn’t underestimate the importance of self-care.

Show of hands: who has never put themselves last during hectic times? We’re too quick to cancel plans with our families, friends, and even ourselves when work piles up. I did it today: I skipped the gym even though I feel and perform better (at work and at home) when I’ve recharged my batteries. I know I’m not alone.

Consequent self-care is a healthier, more fulfilling gift than chocolates and flowers. So make a commitment to yourself on Valentine’s Day this year. Schedule the time you need for yourself, and don’t stand yourself up. Prioritize yourself. Read a book. The positive effects on your wellbeing, on your performance at home and at work, will be worth it.

(But perhaps buy yourself some chocolates and flowers, too, just because.)
