Frankfurt/Lucerne, 15.10.2008 – Who are the intrepid masterminds of the business book world? How did they succeed in grabbing readers’ attention? For the eighth year running, getAbstract presented its award for the Business Book of the Year at the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Following the assessment of more than 10,000 English and German business books, ranging from leadership and management to strategy and marketing to finance and career development, the renowned prize went to the following titles:

ENGLISH

Mobs, Messiahs, and Markets by William Bonner and Lila Rajiva, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

With withering one-liners and sledgehammer-subtle analysis, Bonner and Rajiva embark on an amusing and fascinating study of human nature. Funny, irreverent and thought-provoking, this treatise on human behavior in business and politics is a joy to read.

Economic Facts and Fallacies by Thomas Sowell, Basic Books / Perseus Books

Sowell shows economic fallacies at work in discussions of urbanization, gender equality, education, income, race and development. The result is a bracing tonic that will almost certainly change your views on some of the most emotional issues of the day.

GERMAN

Vorbeben (“Foreshock”) by Wolfgang Münchau, Carl Hanser Verlag

Münchau examines what went wrong in the financial markets in 2007. His work is pristine and geared towards advanced students. The content appears to be spot-on: shortly after the book appeared, the markets developed more or less as he had prophesized.

Humanomics by Uwe Jean Heuser, Campus Verlag

Feelings lead financial specialists to make rookie mistakes and intelligent citizens to undermine their pension schemes. However, they also prevent society turning into a capitalistic crocodile pit. Heuser takes an informative and emotional look at the world of economics.

At the festive event, Dr. Rolf Dobelli (chairman and chief editor at getAbstract) presented the elegant trophies to the authors and their publishers, who had travelled especially for the event. This year’s award ceremony gathered the typically illustrious group of publishing representatives from near and far.
